Who is Zan Tien-Lei?
Tien-Lei was born in Hong Kong, then moved to Beijing, China when she was a few months old. However, right before she started high school, her father's company transferred him to Japan and naturally, the family moved as well. At Shin Mugen Gakuen, Tien-Lei quickly excelled in sports and athletics and made many friends--as a result, her Japanese improved by leaps and bounds. Due to her very easy-going and adaptable nature, she has integrated well into Japanese society. An independent person, she likes to travel and explore on her own. As a result, she is much more knowledgeable about the smaller neighborhoods of Tokyo than most native Tokyo-ites are.
Tien-Lei is, for the most part, friendly and nice. Its generally rare for her to make a disparaging comment about someone, but she does do it (though rarely, if ever to their face). In general, she prefers to remain quiet. Although she's a talkative and vivacious person, she rarely partakes in debates or pointless arguments. If forced to give an opinion, she tends to give a rather vague answer or just agree for the sake of harmony. Afterall, what is the point of people getting mad over things that people won't ever agree on anyways? Because of this dislike for the controversial, she can come off shallow as her general topics of conversation are clothes or celebrities. This is not the case as she reads a lot (other than magazines) and is actually quite intellectual--it just doesn't come out in the form of intellectual debate. Tien-Lei also doesn't understand people who go out of their way to be difficult or strange, such as Shikami, though she'd prefer to let them be the way they are rather than give them a lecture. She fancies those who would tell people how to live their lives to be rather arrogant and egocentric.

Sailorsagittarius was the second Zodiac Senshi to be discovered and she was the easiest to convince that she was a Zodiac Senshi. It may be because of her love for old Chinese legends where people can walk on water and ride on clouds--or it may be that she just never bothered to give it a second thought. During the Golden Millennium, she functioned as Sailorleo's right-hand man, a role which she has reprised on Earth--though to a much lesser degree. Rather than being loyal to Leo, she simply chooses not to dissent since she recognizes her own lack of leadership skill (as compared to Leo's--though on her own, she would probably make a decent leader). As a Senshi, she controls the Silver Arrow, which she believes (half-seriously) to be a gifts Tien-mu and Lei-gong, goddess and god of thunder and lightning. Each arrow strikes with the power of a lightning bolt.

Attacks & Powers

Sagittarius Cosmic Star Power, Make Up
Tien-Lei says this to turn into Sailorsagittarius. She raises her henshin stick to the sky and purple lightining emits from it raises to the sky, then falls back down and wraps itself around her, forming her fuku, boots, and gloves.

    Silver Arrow Strike (Offensive Attack)
When Sailorsagittarius says this, a quiver appears filled with arrows made of silver lightning. A bow appears in her hands and she is able to fire arrows at enemies as fast as her hands allow.

    Lightning Arrow Surround (Defensive Attack)
When she says this she creates the bow and arrows as before, but instead of her usual silver arrows, she takes one larger arrow which then turns into thousands of tiny arrows after being fired. They surround their target, forcing them immobile, but not actually attacking them (since the energy is so dispered that each arrow only has about as much "force" as static electricity.)

Author's Comments

Tien-Lei was originally based on one of my friends when I was a thirteen year old high school girl. However, during the rewrites she was made Chinese and given a new name. There was really no reason for this decision, I just wanted to diversify all the previous American exchange students I had written before. Amusingly enough, when I went to research Chinese gods of lightning and thunder, I realized that she has a very interesting name. Her first name is made up of the first characters of Tien-mu and Lei-gong, a Chinese husband and wife team who control lightning and thunder, respectively. Funny coincidence. :)
Tien-Lei has some Sagittarian qualities: she's energetic and adventurous, honest, trustworthy and deeply believes in what she does. However, I think it would be absurd to say a person's personality is based more on their zodiac signs than on the environment they lived in. The rest of Tien-Lei's personality is shaped from the family and environment she lives in. Much of the rest of her personality was based on a decision to use a lot of the qualities that my Asian-born Chinese friends have. For example, although most of my Asian-born friends have their own opinions and disagree completely with a lot of things--they're less inclined to start a fight someone over it. Getting along is viewed quite highly while the troublesome person who says whatever they want whenever they want is just seen as rude or whatever. How do I know this? The many culture clashes that arose from being in Singaporean Student Association (populated by Asian-born Chinese) and having 60% of my friends from Hong Kong or Taiwan (and being raised there, NOT in the U.S.) Some may say this is being stereotypical, but why would it be? Unlike what some people would like me to do, I have no intention of ever having a character represent the whole of a ethnicity or zodiac sign. ^_~ Of course not all Chinese people act like Tien-Lei, thinking that I was trying to do that is as silly as thinking Tien-Lei is supposed to represent all people born under Sagittarius. ^_~ Good lord, would that mean Jessica Taylor was supposed to represent all American women? ;)
